MoboMath Support Bulletin for Licensed and Trial Users
Important Information for Norton and McAfee Antivirus Users
August 5, 2009
Updated August 21, 2009
Recently, we discovered that certain antivirus products, including Norton and McAfee, were misidentifying the MoboMath 1.1.2 executable (MoboMath.exe) as containing a virus or trojan. For Norton, the problem was first detected on August 3, 2009. We do not know the exact date when the problem first appeared in McAfee, but we beleive it was in the same timeframe.
First, we would like to assure you that the version of MoboMath in question did not contain a virus or trojan. We thoroughly scan all new product versions for viruses and other malware using multiple antivirus tools before each release, and we routinely rescan them following release, which led to the discovery of this issue.
The problem was triggered by recent updates to virus definitions by the antivirus vendors. Both Norton and McAfee began misidentifying a sequence of bytes in the MoboMath executable as a virus signature – a so-called "false positive" – when in fact no virus was present.
Once the issue was discovered, we immediately contacted both antivirus vendors to resolve it. As of August 5, Norton confirmed that the issue has been resolved in their products. McAfee has since reported that the problem was corrected in their virus definitions on August 21.
In the meantime, we have repackaged MoboMath 1.1.2 to avoid a conflict with the problematic virus definitions. New MoboMath purchases and downloads as of August 5, 2009, should not be affected by this problem.
Problem Impact and Resolution
If this issue was already identified on your system, it is likely that your MoboMath executable has been deleted or quarantined. This could prevent you from successfully installing a trial or licensed copy of MoboMath or render an installed version inoperable. Until your antivirus software is updated with corrected definitions, you can resolve the problem by downloading and installing the newly repackaged MoboMath release. Reinstalling your existing copy will not work.
Trial users may download the updated release here.
Licensed users should download this update.
Once you download the updated release, you should fully uninstall your existing version of MoboMath through the Windows Control Panel. Then run the newly downloaded file to reinstall MoboMath.
We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused you. While we have no control over the antivirus definitions which triggered the problem, we regret the impact it may have had on your evaluation or use of MoboMath.
