Adapting MoboMath to your handwriting

MoboMath recognizes characters based on how they are written, not their final visual appearance. For most characters, a variety of different entry styles are recognized. This supports the broadest possible range of users without requiring special training, but in some cases you may find that MoboMath is unable to recognize one of your characters.

If MoboMath is consistently unable to recognize a particular character that you write, you can train it to understand your unique writing style. For example, if you write an x like this )( and find that it is always recognized incorrectly, you can adapt MoboMath to look for that stroke pattern and interpret it as an x.

Before you begin:

Be sure that the character needs to be adapted.

  • Review and follow MoboMath's handwriting guidelines to be sure your problem is not caused by other factors.

  • Write the character by itself in blank space and tap the Enter button to see whether it can be recognized. Repeat this a few times to see if your results are consistent. If the character can often be recognized correctly, it probably does not need to be adapted.

  • Adapt a character only if absolutely necessary. If you adapt too many characters, your recognition results may actually be worse.

To adapt MoboMath to recognize one of your characters:

  • Choose Adapt Character from the Math menu to open the Adapt Character dialog.

  • Select the character you want to adapt from the scrolling character lists on the Text, Greek, or Math tabs. Then tap Continue to begin entering character samples.

  • On the Character Samples page, write a sample of your character in the large box in the center. Just below the box, tap Add to add your sample to the Samples list at the right, or select Clear to erase your entry and start again.

  • To delete or replace a sample, select it from the Samples list on the right and tap Delete at the bottom of the list. You can then enter a replacement sample if necessary.

  • After you have entered at least six samples, tap OK to save your adaptation. The OK button is only enabled after you have entered the required number of samples.

  • Try writing your character in the main MoboMath window and tap Enter to verify that it is recognized properly. If it is not, you may need to modify or replace your character adaptation by repeating the steps above.

You can review your existing character adaptations or delete one or more of them using the Show Adaptations dialog.

To review your adapted characters or delete a character adaptation:

  • Choose Show Adaptions from the Math menu to open the Show Adaptations dialog.

  • To view your samples for an adapted character, select the character from the list at the left. The samples for that character are displayed in the scrolling list at the right.

  • To delete an adaptation, select the character from the list on the left and tap Delete just below the list to remove it. Tap the OK button to confirm your deletion, or Cancel to leave the adaptation unchanged.

  • After deleting an adaptation, you can return to the Adapt Character dialog to enter a replacement if necessary.
