Using MoboMath with MathMagic

Top  Previous  Next

MathMagic is a popular WYSIWYG equation editor for documents, presentations, and desktop publishing applications. In MathMagic, you build equations using keyboard and palette entries. By adding MoboMath, you can also create and edit MathMagic expressions using handwritten input.

MoboMath for MathMagic is a special version of MoboMath designed expressly for use with MathMagic and is included with most new or upgrade copies of MathMagic for Windows.

This same MathMagic support is also available in the full version of MoboMath, together with support for many other popular math formats and applications. If you have MoboMath for MathMagic and are interested in upgrading to the full version of MoboMath, select "Upgrade now" from the MoboMath Help menu for more details. For a list of additional applications supported by the full version of MoboMath, please see this help topic.

To get started using MoboMath with MathMagic, just follow the steps below. If you are using MoboMath for the first time, you may also want to read through the topics in the Getting Started section before beginning.

Set MathMagic as your export format

Choose MathMagic from the Export menu, or select it in the Configure Export dialog. This sets up the appropriate options for transferring expressions to MathMagic and recognizing MathMagic's standard list of functions.

Move your expression to MathMagic

Once your expression has been recognized, you can copy it to MathMagic by dragging it or using copy and paste. You can drag or paste the expression into either an empty placeholder for a new equation or into an existing equation. If you are planning to create several new expressions, it may be easiest to first create a number of empty placeholders in MathMagic using the Enter key.

A line appears in the MoboMath window as you drag but is erased as soon as you drop your expression into MathMagic.

Once your expression has been copied to MathMagic, you can use any of MathMagic's built-in tools to modify it.

Editing existing MathMagic expressions in MoboMath

To edit an existing MathMagic equation using MoboMath, copy and paste the expression into MoboMath using MathMagic's "Copy as HTML" command. "Copy as HTML" is available in both the Edit and context menus.

Once your equation has been pasted into MoboMath, you can use any of the techniques and tools described in Editing expressions to modify the equation.

You cannot drag expressions from MathMagic to MoboMath since these are in a custom format that MoboMath cannot recognize.

Additional tips

Before you begin, you may want to rerun the Configuration wizard and check your settings in the Grammar menu to be sure all the math elements and symbols that you use in MathMagic are enabled.

In some cases, it may be more convenient to enter several expressions at a time in the MoboMath window before moving each of them to MathMagic. MoboMath supports separate math regions to make this simple. Be sure to tap the Enter button after entering each expression since MoboMath can only translate one expression at a time.

If you also use MoboMath with other applications, be sure to change your export format back to MathMagic if necessary before starting your work.
