Using MoboMath with MathType

Top  Previous  Next

You can use MoboMath with the MathType equation editor to create math expressions for use in web sites and hundreds of applications. MoboMath can be used both when running MathType as a separate application and when using it in Microsoft Word.

If you are using MoboMath for the first time, you may want to read through the topics in the Getting Started section before beginning. These provide a number of helpful tips that will make your use of MoboMath more productive and enjoyable.

Set MathType as your export format

First, select MathType as your export format from either the Export menu or the Configure Export dialog. This setting lets you work with MathType whether it is running separately or within Microsoft Word.

Entering equations for MathType

Write an expression in the MoboMath window and translate it to a formatted math expression by tapping the Enter button in the MoboMath toolbar.

Make any necessary changes using the editing techniques described in Editing expressions. When you are happy with your equation, drag or paste it into MathType.

You can drag or paste your expression into either an empty equation window to create a new equation, or into an existing equation that you want to modify. If you paste into a selection within an existing equation, your new expression will replace the selection.

Editing existing equations

To move a MathType equation to MoboMath for editing, choose "Cut and Copy Preferences" from the MathType Preferences menu. Select the "Equation for application or website" radio button and choose MoboMath from the dropdown list. (If your version of MathType doesn't list MoboMath, choose "MathML 2.0 (no namespace)" instead in the "MathML or TeX" dropdown list.)

Then, drag or paste your equation from MathType into MoboMath and make any necessary changes. See the Editing expressions topic for guidance on modifying expressions.

Working with MathType in Microsoft Word

If you use MathType in Microsoft Word by inserting equations from the MathType tab or menu, you can work with it exactly as described above.

You can also create expressions in MoboMath and drag or paste them directly into Word.

If you paste directly into Word, MathType immediately formats the expression and displays it in your document. In general, pasting or working directly with MathType will produce the best results.

If you drag into Word, a bitmap is initially displayed. To reformat the expression, follow these steps:

In Word's MathType tab or menu, choose Convert Equations.
In "Equation types to convert", be sure "MathType or Equation Editor equations" is checked.
In "Convert equations to", be sure "MathType equations (OLE objects)" is selected.
Click Convert. After conversion, a dialog will appear telling you how many equations were converted. Click OK to return to your document.

You can do this after every expression, but it may be easier to wait until you have finished entering equations and then run a single conversion for the entire document.

Additional tips

Before you begin, you may want to rerun the Configuration wizard and check your settings in the Grammar menu to be sure all the math elements and symbols that you use in MathType are enabled.

In some cases, it may be more convenient to enter several expressions at a time in the MoboMath window before moving each of them to MathType. MoboMath supports separate math regions to make this simple. Be sure to tap the Enter button after entering each expression since MoboMath can only translate one expression at a time.

If you also use MoboMath with other applications, be sure to change your export format back to MathType when working with Microsoft Word or the MathType application.
