The MoboMath window features a writing area where you enter expressions, a toolbar for quick access to common operations, and a set of menus. After you write an expression, just tap the Enter button in the toolbar to convert your entry into a formatted equation.

Once your entry has been converted, you can copy or drag it into a document or web page in any compatible application. MoboMath supports a number of popular applications and equation formats, including Mathematica, Maple, Microsoft Word 2003 and 2007, MathML, TeX, LaTeX, and images.

Be sure to select the appropriate format from the Export menu before copying your expression into your target application. Many popular math applications now support MathML, which is an emerging XML standard for math interoperability.

First Things First

Configuration wizardThe first time you run MoboMath, a Configuration Wizard appears which lets you tune MoboMath for the types of equations you enter. Disabling expression elements that you don't use helps improve handwriting recognition speed and accuracy by limiting the number of options MoboMath needs to consider. You can change your initial selections later through the Grammar menu.

You may also want to select Preferences from the Edit menu to customize MoboMath's appearance and behavior. You can change the default font, cursor, colors, and behavior to suit your needs.

Before you begin using MoboMath, it's a good idea to browse through the resources in the MoboMath Help menu. The Getting Started section has many valuable tips for first time users, and the Video Tutorials are especially useful for seeing MoboMath in action. You can also find the same help material on this web site.

Start with the Basics

Once you have browsed through help, try writing a simple expression in the MoboMath window using your tablet's pen or stylus - something like "a+b-c".

Simple handwritten expression

Then tap the Enter button to convert your handwritten expression into a formatted expression.

If the results differ from what you wrote, don't worry - MoboMath includes a number of useful tools that let you easily edit expressions. See the Editing sections in MoboMath Help or on this site for more information.

If you want, try dragging or copying your expression into a compatible application, being sure to select the correct export format first. As you drag, a line will appear in the MoboMath window, but it will be disappear as soon as you finish dragging your expression into the target application.

After you are comfortable writing and editing simple expressions, try slightly more complex expressions, like those shown on this page. After a bit of practice, you should be able to easily enter most expressions that you normally use.

Usage Tips

For best results, follow the simple rules below when entering expresions:

  • Write clearly along a reasonably straight line, not on an angle.
  • Print your entries. Don't connect characters or use cursive script.
  • Write expressions in a natural order - don't go back to fix mistakes or make characters look better.
  • To erase your last strokes or undo other operations, tap the Undo button next to the Enter button.
  • If a character is not recognized correctly, tap it to get an alternate recognition result.
  • To clear everything from the page, tap the Clear Page button.
  • Remember that only formatted expressions can be edited or copied to other applications, not handwritten input.
