Using MoboMath with Microsoft Word

MoboMath supports native Microsoft® Word Equation Editor formats for Microsoft Word 2010, 2007, and 2003. Microsoft Word 2007 introduced a new XML-based equation editor, but equations from Word 2003 and earlier versions are still supported in newer versions.

To get started, just follow the steps below. If you don't already have MoboMath, you can download a trial version here.

If you use MathType with Microsoft Word, please see the MathType page instead for instructions on working with MathType in Microsoft Word.

1 Choose an export format

Export menu

Choose an appropriate format for your document and your version of Word from the MoboMath Export menu.

  • For Microsoft Word 2003, select Word 2003 as the export format.
  • For Microsoft Word 2007 and 2010, you can choose either Word 2003 or Word 2007 formats, depending on which style of equation you want to use.
2 Write an expression in MoboMath

Write a math expression in the MoboMath window as you normally would on paper.

If you see any errors in your translated expression, you can correct them using MoboMath's editing tools. See the MoboMath documentation for details.

4 Move it to Maple for evaluation

Then drag the expression to the spot where you want to insert it in your Word document, or copy and paste it to that spot. If you are using Word 2003 format, you may need to double-tap the expression in Word to reformat it using the Microsoft Word 2003 Equation Editor.

5 Evaluate your expression

Any expressions you copy to Microsoft Word can be edited using Word's built-in equation editor. In addition, you can edit most existing Word expressions in MoboMath.

Existing Microsoft Word expressions can be dragged or copied and pasted into MoboMath for editing, where you can modify them using MoboMath's editing tools. When your changes are complete, you can then drag or copy and paste your expression back into Microsoft Word to update an existing document.
