Adding to an expression

You can add to an expression in any place that is mathematically valid. Common additions are:

To make simple additions to an expression:

  • Write new characters where you want them to be added.

  • Tap Enter to include them in your expression.

To make multiple additions to an expression:

  • You can add to more than one spot in an expression in a single entry. For example, you can change the expression "a + b" to "a2 + b2" by writing both new exponents and then tapping Enter.

  • Parentheses and other types of brackets must always be added in pairs in the appropriate locations.

  • For more complex additions, make one change at a time.

To insert space in an expression for new text:

You can insert space in an expression using an editing gesture.

  • To insert space, write a gesture like this, moving down and then to the right:

    Insert space gesture

Space is inserted at the point where you start the gesture. The length of the inserted space is proportional to the width of the gesture.

  • Write your change in the added space and tap Enter to include it in your expression.

The best approach is to insert more space than you need. Extra space is removed as soon as you enter your next change to the expression.
