Modifying matrices

You can change matrices by editing individual elements or by inserting or deleting rows or columns.

To change individual elements of a matrix:

  • To change an existing value, use any of the editing techniques you use for other expressions.

  • To replace an element, write your change directly on top of the old value and tap Enter. If the new entry is shorter than the old one, you may first need to select or clear the existing element to be sure the old value is completely replaced.

  • To fill in a blank element, write your entry where it belongs and tap the Enter toolbar button.

To insert a new column:

  • Draw a vertical line through the entire matrix where you want the new column to be inserted.

  • You must draw your line between existing columns or between the first or last column and one of the brackets enclosing the matrix.

To insert a new row:

  • Draw a horizontal line across the entire matrix where you want the new row to be inserted.

  • You must draw your line between existing rows or above the first row or below the last row of the matrix.

To delete a row or column:

Select all elements in the row or column and tap the Clear toolbar button.

After you insert a new row or column, be sure to fill in at least one element in your next entry or the space you added will be removed.
