Using MoboMath with Microsoft Word

MoboMath supports the native Microsoft Office Equation Editors for Microsoft Word 2008 and 2011. Microsoft Word 2011 introduced a new XML-based equation editor, but equations from Word 2008 are still supported in the newer version.

To select the appropriate version of Word for your target:

Determine which version of the Word equation editor to target based on your document and your version of Word.

  • If you are using Microsoft Word 2008, select Word 2008 as the target.

  • If you are using Microsoft Word 2011, you can choose either Word 2008 or Word 2011 as your target, depending on which equation editor and style of equation you want to use. If you are editing an existing document, you will normally want to match the equation style already being used in the document.

To use MoboMath with Microsoft Word:

  1. Set Word 2008 or 2011 as your target

Decide which version of the Word equation editor to target as described above and choose it from the MoboMath Target menu or toolbar popup.

  2. Write a math expression

Write an expression in MoboMath and tap the Enter toolbar button to convert it to formatted math.

  3. Copy the expression to Microsoft Word

Copy and paste or drag and drop the expression into your Word document where you want it to appear.

  4. Redisplay it if necessary

If Word 2008 is set as your target, your expression will initially be displayed as an image. To convert it to normal equation display, choose Convert from the Edit > Equation Object submenu and tap OK, or choose Open from the submenu to open the expression in the Word equation editor. When you return to Word from the equation editor, your expression will be properly formatted.

You can also edit existing expressions from Microsoft Word using MoboMath.

To edit an expression from Microsoft Word in MoboMath:

  1. In Word, select the expression you want to edit. For a Word 2008 expression, just tap the equation object to select it. For Word 2011, be sure all the text in the expression is selected and highlighted.

  2. Copy and paste or drag the expression into MoboMath.

  3. Make your changes to the expression using any of MoboMath's editing tools.

  4. Copy and paste or drag the expression back into Microsoft Word.

In addition to Word's native equation editors, MoboMath supports MathType as an equation editor in Microsoft Office. If you use MathType with Microsoft Office, please refer to the MathType help topic for details.
